What is Plastering?

In ancient times, primitive people used to plaster the sapling shelters with mud to protect their houses from the penetration of the rainwater. The plastered screen helps them to develop more durable structures of their house and safeguarded them from wildlife, and severe weather – this is how the ancient people developed a strategy to protect their homes. Over time, technology and modernization have revised the practice of plastering with mud. Every historical place from the Pyramids of Egypt to the Karl-Max Monuments, and the Long Gallery of the Aston Hall of England, is beautified with the different types of plastering techniques – to provide protection and also to augment the aesthetic appearance.

What is Plaster?

Plaster is made of Binding material and filling material. Binding material is in liquid form, and can be Lime, Gypsum, and liquid Cement. It is used to make a thicker texture of the Plaster and hardens it. While, the filling material is either crushed stones or sand. Color is also added to make aesthetic designs.

What is Plastering?

The process of applying the plaster over the exposed surface to protect it, is termed as “Plastering”. On the wall, partitions, and ceilings are coat with single, double, and sometimes with the triple coats of the plaster depend on how much protection does it require.

What are the Types of Plasters?

Plaster is all around us, walls, roofs, stairs, and a myriad of daily viewed structures are made of plasters. Designs are uniquely implemented with the perfect techniques and applications, using a wide range of instruments for the beautiful craft with plaster.
However, there are 3 popular types of plasters on the market:

  1. Browning plaster: For the decorative pieces, and covering the base to paint, this thick undercoat plaster is used widely. Builders also use the plaster top coat 8-11mm of the surface of the ceiling or roof before painting it.
  2. Bonding Plaster: Like the browning one, Bonding plaster. It is the sticky plaster which is why builders prefer to use it more for the buildings. Due to the sticking ability, it could be used for all kind of surfaces
  3. Thistle Plaster: Unlike browning and binding plaster, it gives a finishing touch to end the plastering process. It is versatile in strength and is also a favorable option to repair the broken plaster of the ceiling or walls.

So, these are the most preferred types of plaster builders have been using for centuries. They are durable, lasting, decorative, and easy to use.
